Super Sentai Season Guidebooks
(Last updated: 2018-12-31)
As should be obvious from this website, I'm a huge comic book fan. One of the offshoots of that interest is Power Rangers. I didn't watch the series when if first came out but got interested in it around the Ninja Storm and DinoThunder seasons. I've since watched all of it since Turbo and much of the early Angel Grove years. Personally, I find aspects of the early Mighty Morphin seasons less enjoyable than the later seasons. Over the years the series has changed and grown considerably. The series is leveraging more of the Sentai storylines and ideas which is both good and bad.
Power Rangers is based on the Super Sentai shows in Japan. I started watching the Sentai series with Abaranger (which was the basis for DinoThunder). I've been hooked on the Sentai shows ever since. Gokaiger is one of my favorate seasons.
Over in Japan there are books for each Sentai series. I think these books started getting published with Jetman but I'm not 100% certain of that. (If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.) From Dekaranger through Boukenger, a single book a year was no longer enough room to cover the year long series so they did two books for those season.
While it is not entirely trivial to get copies of these books here in the USA, it is possible. I've been able to build a library of all of the ones published so far for the sentai shows that have been adapted into Power Rangers. The text is all in Japanese but these books are mainly visual reference books and the text is limited to captions for the photos.
One thing that has made it both harder and more expensive to get these guidebooks since they have been bundled with various DVD/BluRays starting with Shinkenger. To make it easier for others to find the books, I've included scans of the DVD/BluRay they were bundled with. It is possible to get just the DVD/BluRay without the book so double check the book is included if/when you place any online orders.
This website seems to list which the various guidebooks that have been published and which DVD/BluRay they were bundled with. The website is in Japanese so I use the translation feature in the Chrome browser to get a rough convertion of the page into English.
