I'll be starting off FCBD at Nuclear Comics in Laguna Niguel, they generally open early on FCBD. After that I'll be heading up to Comics Toons & Toys in Tustin. I'm not yet decided on how I'll be spending my time later in the day.

The main focus on FCBD is enjoying the day with my daughters since they love FCBD. It is a very good father/daughters bonding experience. Of course, FCBD starts the night before, as we are going to see the Avengers Friday night.
Now one problem with FCBD is soccer season. Basically I am out all day Saturday going from field to field. While my kids love to play soccer, they really want to go a LCS early as well (I trained my kids very well).
Our plan is to go to the Laughing Ogre in Loudoun County VA when it opens at 10am. It is a nice store and the closest to our house and more importantly the soccer field of the first game of the day. The kids will pick up some free comics, as well as, buy some comics (since this day isn't free to the retailer). Now, I am normally a good soccer dad and we generally show up well in advance of the game to warm up. However, I think on this day we might just get to the game when it starts.
After my youngest finishes her game and freshen up, we will drive to Vienna, VA to Big Planet Comics. They are having Jeremy Whitley (writer of Princeless) and Jorge Aguirre (writer of the new all-ages comic Giants Beware!) signing books from 11 to 1pm. My daughters love meeting creators (my oldest already asked if the full list of guests have been published for the 2012 Baltimore Comic Con), so this should be a cool experience for them. After that, we will drive back to my oldest's soccer game, which is in the late afternoon.
That is our plan.

FCBD always falls on a day I play D&D, so I'll probably be sitting this one out again. But DCBS hooks us up, so it's not all lost.
If I get the chance I'll head over to Pulp Nouveau Comix in Canandaigua, NY. The store owner, Mike, is really good guy and huge comic fan. He'll have some sort of event planned and at a minimum he usually does 1/2 off back issues.

This entire week will consist of me running around like a chicken with it's head cut off and it's tail on fire. I have most of the comics in store (the rest arrive this week assuming Diamond doesn't screw me). I have to set up all the signs for the sales and the door prizes we are doing. I need to do all the displays and finish up our promoting. And then Saturday I will be sitting in the store praying that anyone shows up and my hard work isn't a waste
And to top it all off, the new Magic the Gathering set comes out on Friday and launch events are Saturday too (thanks a lot Wizards ). So if anyone is in the Troy, NY area swing by and see us at The Goblin's Cavern. If nothing else say hi to me and see if I have completely lost my mind.

Arizona people feel free to head over to Gotham City Comics & Coffee where I just got the invite to set up a table and hawk my wares. I'll bring out the new book, Travis the Undying, as well as plenty of copies of Thugs and Dedlock. My partner-in-crime Stephen Reid has also threatened to attend. We'll be sketching and hanging out for most of the day.
It's all a big warm-up for the Phoenix convention later this month.

A rough guide to LA - please correct, supplement, etc.
LA area FCBD events. This is a mix of stuff gleaned from the web, twitter, and my personal experiences. Nothing is guaranteed. I am also only listing stores I have been to. I hear that Beach Ball Comics in Anaheim has fun stuff but that is behind the Orange Curtain and Bob is your main for that. I also don't have anything from the Westside , sorry.
Collector's Paradise: 2 stores Winnetka and Pasadena http://comicsandcards.net/
I have been to both stores. The Winnetka/Canoga Park store (my valley geography gets hazy once you leave Van Nuys) is the main store and they recently purchased the Pasadena store (a little over a year ago). Pretty good selection. Been to FCBD events, always have sales and signings. They can be a bit of a hard sell but it doesn't bother me. They have a percentage credit back program that tracks to both stores. Valley store is doing an event this Wednesday for Mind the Gap with 3 of the creators there (who will also be at that store on FCBD). They are making a whole month of it. They frequently have signings of other creators. I would never make it my regular store but I do spend money when the creators come.
Valley Store – 12 – 3 pm
Ed Brubaker
Joshua Fialkov
Kyle Higgins
Jim McCann
Rodin Esquejo
Sonia Oback
Pasadena Store 2 – 5 pm
Steve Niles
Gabriel Hardman
Corinna Bechko
Shane Houghton
Chris Houghton
Matt Whitlock
As I am contractually obligated to stalk the Houghton boys, I will be hitting the Pasadena Store. Not sure about the valley store. They do lots of events at these stores and I recommend hitting those events.
Comics Factory – Pasadena. My first LCS in Southern California and I would argue probably the best selection around. I really like this store. I don’t ask for discounts but on occasion, they have just given me one. Too far for me to visit regularly and sort of used to regular discounts, but I still visit. They have back issues and stuff way in the back that you can't get. Just ask them if they have it and they will get it. I think they might be on Facebook but I am not. If I go to Pasadena I might swing by even though I have no idea what they are doing. That is how much I like that store. If anyone knows what they are doing, please let me know.
Comic Smash – Studio City - http://www.comicsmash.com/
Despite being close to me, I almost never go to this store any more. Basically Marvel, DC and not much else. I did go last year for the Quarter sale. The selection isn't great but in LA, quarter boxes are getting rarer and rarer. Replaced by the 50 cent and dollar bins. Also doing a sale according to the website:
50% off all Statues
50% off all Action Figures
50% off all Back Issues
20% off all Graphic Novels
I might hit the quarter boxes if my wife is not with me. She is not a fan of the bin diving. Never seen any events there and do not frequent that shop anymore.
DJ's Universal Comics – Studio City - http://www.facebook.com/djsuniversalcomics
Remember if you haven' t been in a few years, they have moved up Ventura about ½ a mile or so. This is my current regular shop. Not a place to bring spouses and significant others. I am not a pull list guy but if you are buying new, there is an automatic discount. Pretty good selection of indies (Big Dog Ink books, Tarot, Ape, Moonstone) but not the best. Last year Jim McCann was there but I don't there will be anyone there. Seem to be lots of statues but I don't collect so can't judge. Frequently has 50% trades but not sure what is going on for FCBD. I will ask on Wednesday. If you are in town for books, I recommend it but not a party place, just for hard core addicts.
Earth 2: 2 locations, Sherman Oaks and Northridge (The old Golden Apple store). They are not updating their website but they are on twitter and facebook. Pet Peeve, but why leave up a webpage with old information. If you don't use it, take it down or just link to facebook or have your store hours, etc. The Sherman Oaks store is the main one. About 3 years ago, they bought the other store off of Golden Apple. This is the place to take the significant other in Sherman Oaks. Clean, well-light, organized. Not that great for hard core people as the selection is pretty bad. Marvel, DC, and very little else. There is some Image and a little indy wall section. They do a buy 10 trades gets the 11th for free program. They will order books for you. They used to do more for FCBD, but looks like "free sketches for kids," raffles and cos-players. The DC book will have their logo on it (making it exclusive). The store is too small for big events. Last year they had Geoff Johns and Jeff Loeb and the line went up the block. I don't see any names there but definitely safe place to take the kids/significant other. "See Honey, not all comic shops are filthy dens of mouth-breathing social misfits." Probably will skip it but might swing by. This used to be my main store when I first move to the valley.
Emerald Knights – Burbank – I just noticed these guys a few months ago when they started doing in store signings. They have had a bunch of Image people, the Womanthology people and others. It looks like Mark Waid on Monday May 14th. Selection is not that good. This is primarily a gaming store but any place that hosts in store creators is good with me. Of course it is rough as they have to content with House of Secrets.
Golden Apple - what are we going to call this, Melrose and just the other side of Hollywood? Not sure the neighborhood. People can poop on this store all they want but they do it up big. They actually have a parking lot, have a play area and it will be madness. This is the place where the TV station will send the crews.
10:00AM - The festivities begin!

*TONS OF GIVEAWAYS!
*PARKING LOT SALE!
*FREE CINCO DE MAYO TACO BAR (W/PURCHASE)
*LIVE DJ SET BY PDUB!
You may have missed it but that GUILD appearance means it will be crazy. I might stop by. It is a real crazy atmosphere but you have to love how they embrace it. Unfortunately the parking lot will be filled with party stuff so parking will be spotty.
House of Secrets - Burbank. This is a big store because so much of the WB crew works in Burbank so they shop here. You can rub elbows with the powers that be. I have been a few times and the staff is very helpful. Selection is decent but nothing too crazy so I only go for events. They will have Jim MCCann and Rodin Esquejo from 5 – 7 pm for the Mind the Gap. Not sure if I will stop by or not.
Meltdown – Hollywood – You would have to think this is the big one right? I mean, unless you put Golden Apple against it, this is likely the top dog. Partnering with the alt. comedy scene seems to have helped the store. They do gaming as well. Good selection and lots of shirts, toys etc. Parking is bad. This store does stuff constantly. Last year was a good FCBD scene. I haven't been able to find what they are doing this year. Stay tuned, it will be happening no doubt.
I am sure I am forgetting something and I realize this is incomplete, but it is early still. Anything looking good to anyone?

It's great to hear that, I patterned it off the shop I visited as a kid because I really liked that layout. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

Was clued into another event going on with Blastoff comics (of whom I had never heard). Thanks to twitter, I learned about this:
We couldn't let Free Comic Book Day go by without giving away some comics! So Blastoff is teaming up with our partners at NE1 SKATE SHOP (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ne1-Skat ... 5291894267) and THE FEDERAL BAR (https://www.facebook.com/thefederalbar) in North Hollywood for a 12-HOUR FCBD Party!
Come on down! We'll have DJs spinning all day and night, artists sketching, food and drink sponsored by The Federal, and of course, Free comic books!
ALL GRAPHIC NOVELS will be 40% OFF!
Of course, Blastoff founder, comic-book writer and noted hermit SCOTT TIPTON will be in the house to scrawl his signature on your STAR TREK comics and lower their value. We'll also be raffling off PRIZES all day!
Also, if you're going to see THE AVENGERS on Saturday, go see it at the LAEMMLE NOHO 7 (https://www.facebook.com/NoHo7), and get a free comic book, courtesy of Blastoff!
Metropolis Comics - Bellflower - Mark Dos Santos. Only see this via Mark's website. I have never been to Metropolis and their webpage is silent as to FCBD. If anyone knows this store, please chime in. I don't get to Bellflower much.
Secret Headquarters - http://thesecretheadquarters.com/ Sunset blvd but I am going to call it Silverlake/Los Feliz. Hipsters, please correct me. I have only been here once. Selection is odd but they do carry mini-comics and the indyiest of indy books. They are linked to FCBD via the website. Some confusion as their website states that FRIDAY, MAY 5 (which is Saturday), they are having Jay Howell for a signing at 7 pm. Only 200 copies of his new zine (exclusively there). I would guess they mean Friday May 4, but call to make sure. I would recommend you visit this store once. It is unique but parking stinks.
Comic Book Junkies - Hollywood - Inside Kayden Creations Tattoo shop. http://comicbookjunkies.net/ Never heard of this joint but will try to stop by this week. Something tells me this might be a mail-order mostly joint but I love finding new shops.
According to the FCBD website, lots of shops are participating but that only means free comics, we want exciting events as well. Emerald Knights is participating but just no big events on their website.
I also forgot about TFAW in Universal CityWalk. Because of the pay for parking, I rarely go to CityWalk except to see IMAX movies (Dark Knight Rises). The shop is pretty tiny. I will kill time there but I have never bought anything there.
Legacy Comics & Cards - Glendale. Never Been. Website is garbage. Facebook page makes them seem more gaming than comics. Nothing listed for FCBD events. Defenders of this store, please set me straight.
Melrose Music & Comics - Melrose. http://www.thrillmerchants.com/ Never been. If I am in that part of the world I go to Meltdown or Golden Apple. Seems like a well established store. They are having a HeroClix tournament and an Avacyn Restored Launch event. I don't know what Avacyn is but guessing it is gaming related or some really obscure comic.
There are a few other places but nothing jumps out at me and it feels like I am not providing much more info than you can get from going to the FCBD website.
Generally it seems like this year doesn't have as much as last year. Very surprised about Meltdown seemingly do nothing. They are having a signing today (as they do about 1/2 the new comic days) but no word on Saturday. Strange. Hope it is enough to lure Bob up North.
Also to rant again, businesses why move to Facebook when you let your own webpage go to seed? I am seeing more and more of this. There must be upload services that let you dual post. It is a big turnoff for me and I can't be alone.

Been there. Very average shop, nothing to make me want to go out of my way to go back there.LA Rabbit wrote: Metropolis Comics - Bellflower - Mark Dos Santos. Only see this via Mark's website. I have never been to Metropolis and their webpage is silent as to FCBD. If anyone knows this store, please chime in. I don't get to Bellflower much.
I saw Mark Dos Santos @ WonderCon & will see him again at Phoenix Con. He's a great artist, so would be a reason to go to this shop for people who will not be able to catch him at a con & would like to get a sketch.

Instead of me driving up to the Valley, you guys should come down to Manhattan Beach this year & join me for a visit to this place. This looks great!
Originally, I was going to do my Comic Crawl to about 4-5 stores around the Bay Area but just about everything is happening on May 5th this year.
I've been in more of an art mode rather than reading comics mode so I'm skipping out on FCBD all together and going to an all day figure drawing session. Nothing like drawin' some nekkid people!! (Actually, I love drawing people but so rarely of late get to do any kind of life drawing with models).
After that, a bunch of us are going to see the Avengers movie. A few of those people are going to swing by Flying Colors Comics, owned by Joe Field, creator of FCBD, out in Concord, CA.
I got my 5 free books on order with DCBS so I'm good. But it would be nice to pick up some extra kid-friend books for my summer instructor gig teaching kids cartooning. They all get their influences from anime and cartoons and so few of them read or even look at comics.
