Gothan City Sirens #1 (DC) - This was an OK issue. I like the teaming of Poison Ivy, Harley and Catwoman. The story was mostly setup for getting them together. I thought the art was really mediocre. It is the kind of art that would probably make me bump this series to picking it up in trades if it continues down the road.

BobBretall wrote: Cursed Pirate Girl #1 (Olympian Publishing) - Wow! What a great book! I won't go so far as to say it will be the next "Bone" (but maybe it will). It will at least be the next "Castle Waiting" (another all-ages book I love).
I'm with you on this one, I was duly impressed by both the story and the very detailed, very distinctive art. It has a wonderful almost fairy tale feel to it. The next Mouse Guard!

(And I do mean distinctive, some of those character designs were wild!)

Hm, the more I think about it, the more I want to go read it again.

I have been really lax about putting new #1 books up.

Chew #1 - was fantastic. It is about a detective who is Cibopathic. He can take a bite of any food or thing and tell it's history. Great introductory issue by John Layman and Rob Guillory. I was also surprised how fast this book went up in price on ebay. People are actually buying it for over $29 and in most cases more. I would sell it if I was not crazy.
Red Robin #1 - I thought this was a good start to a new book and I am with John on this one. I could see Tim acting like this after losing his adapted father. Sooner or later it was bound to happen after everything this hero has lost. Not crazy about the art but it did not bother me that much.
Rawbone#1 - Really did not like Delano's writing but I did enjoy the artwork. I am going to finish the series but if I did not preorder the issues I would have ended this with number 1.
Fusion#1 - Crossover with the Avengers and Cyberforce. It was not bad but did not knock my socks off. Again if I did not pre-order this it might have been on the chopping block.
US-1 - A 80's comic about a superhero trucker. Picked this up a Heroes for 10 cents and I was really entertained by this weird concept of a trucker. Very interesting and funny concepts.
Dark Reign Young Avengers #1 - Was just ok. It did not bother me that it was a new group of kids, it bothered me because it just as not that good and Cornell is better than that.
Dark Reign The Hood #1 - I really do like the character of the Hood but had trouble getting into this book. I am still sticking with it but just barely.
Dark Reign Hawkeye #1 - Now this one was really good. I am an Andy Diggle fan and this one did not disappoint me. This one and Elektra are very good.
Buck Rogers #1 - Did not like this one at all as a first issue. Really did not like the way the book was laid out.

Final Crisis Run #1 - The Human Flame is an @$$ but man did I enjoy this book. It is my favorite of the bunch of Final Crisis books. I need to read #2 soon. This is really well written.

Final Crisis Dance #1
- I was wanted to like this more than I did. I enjoyed Super Young Team in Final Crisis but this book was slow to get me excited. There was enough for me to stick around.

Final Crisis Ink #1
- The Tattoo Man. This one was really well drawn and written and I enjoyed it much better than I thought I would. My second favorite of the four.

Final Crisis Escape #1
- Nemesis, Suicide Squad, OMAC. Very weird but if you have an appreciation for Jack Kirby's OMAC you will appreciate this book. Also if you are a fan of the prisoner.

Overall very happy with these books. I really did not know what to expect.

Batman - Streets of Gotham #1 - I will be honest even though I like Batman the only reason I was picking up Detective is because Dini was writing it. This is essentially the same team that was doing Detective doing this book. I really enjoyed the art, and me Dini writes the adult version of Animated Gotham that I really dig.

PS.

Big thumbs up for any one that can make Firefly dangerous.

Marvel Divas #1 -It was a total struggle for me to get through this book. It was a chick flick in comics form, and I am really not the target audience. While I can see someone loving this, I hated it.

Wednesday Comics #1 - I loved this. I walked into the LCS on Wednesday and grinned as soon as I saw it. Love the oversized pages and the newspaper feel. As far as the stories, many more winners than losers:

[WebWiz20][WebWiz20]: Batman, Kamandi, Superman, Deadman, Green Lantern, Metamorpho, Metal Men, Flash Comics, The Demon and Catwoman

[WebWiz20]: Strange Adventures, Supergirl, Sgt. Rock, Hawkman

[WebWiz21]: Teen Titans, Wonder Woman

Worth the $3.99 and the most fun I've had reading comics in a long time. I hope this is a success for DC so we can get a volume 2 next year.

Greek Street #1 (Vertigo) - I can see someone really liking this comic, but it really did nothing for me. I could see that there were supposed to be lots of parallels to Greek myth, but the story was too layered and I'm not really looking for entertainment that I have to struggle to get the meaning out of. Some people love that and I can respect that, they might love this series. For me, I have no problem with a series that has deep themes & content as long as the writer crafts a surface story that can be enjoyed in parallel, that was what I was not seeing here.

Existence 2.0 #1 (Image) - Pretty cool concept, research scientist creates a device that allows you to overlay your mind onto someone else's mind, essentially taking over their body. He uses it on the hitman sent after him just as he's getting killed. Now he's in the hitman's body and the story begins. Lots of cool concepts to be had in this one.

Wednesday Comics #1 (DC)

I think it was pretty typical for an anthology. Some stuff I absolutely loved, some stuff I hated, the rest was in the middle.

While I respect DC for trying something new here, this was not the result of a ray of divine light from God himself shining upon a printing press and spewing forth a divine work of art (as some people seem to be implying), it was a set of 1-page comics printed really big.....innovative for comics? Yes. The greatest thing since Jack Kirby picked up a pencil? Certainly not.

What I thought of the features (not that anyone should care about what I think, but it's interesting that with the vast variety, different features are going to be the favorite of person A, while loathed by person B). Any anthology is likely to have a variety of stuff, some not up to the standards of the others. While a decent read, it's better parts were dragged down (for me) by the stuff I didn't care for quite as much, but that's an anthology for you, and really something you should expect going in.

While in the comics shop, I listened to a guy raving about how great the Deadman page was. To me, it was average at best. Different Strokes.

5/5
Metal Men - Didio did good. And the art was really nice too.
Kamandi - This was channeling an old Hal Foster Prince valiant page if anything was.
Metamorpho - Wow! Allred draws a nice Saphire Stagg.

4/5
Adam Strange - Very nicely done! A lot of story packed into this page
Supergirl - Nice art, not much story yet, but with this creative team, should be fun when it gets going.
Green Lantern - Nice setup, mostly for people familiar with the characters, though. I have high hopes for this once it gets going.

3/5
Flash - Some people were loving the "split page" with Iris in a "Juliet Jones" kind of strip along the bottom. That was not working for me, I'd rather have seen Flash for the whole page.
Sgt. Rock - Not much of a story here yet. Good art, seems like this will get better.
Catwoman/Demon - Not much of a story here yet. Good art, seems like this will get better.
Batman - Seems like Azzarello could have done a 1st page with a bit more "punch"
Superman - Really weak 1st page, the alien looks goofy, not really in step with the general painted art style.

2/5
Deadman - Art was really off-putting for me for some reason. kept me from getting into the story, just a personal thing, though, seems like the story will be decent enough.
Hawkman - I'm thinking that a story narrated by a bird, while interesting conceptually, is not going to work for me.

1/5
Teen Titans - Not only was this muddled, Galloway could not even be bothered to draw facial features on Wonder Girl in the top row.
Wonder Woman - I could not even make it through reading the entire page....
The Format - I really don't like this format. I'm certainly not going with the popular opinion on this one though. The paper seemed cheap to me, and it was difficult to read. I know they want to evoke being a 10-year-old laying on the floor to read the Sunday comics, but I'm not 10, and I don't want to lay on the floor to read this.

If I average this out, Wednesday comics gets a 3/5 from me.

Chew #1 (Image) – I read this in black and white in the back of Walking Dead #63. It wasn’t my cup of tea. Not a bad comic, just not my thing. I couldn’t buy a major premise of the book. I wasn’t getting the humor either. I’m glad I didn’t pay for this one. I can see why people might like it if you really like stories like on the TV show CSI, but I was never in to that.

BPRD 1947 #1 of 5 (Dark Horse) – We weren’t given that much story to go on in this first issue but it was enough for me to want more. I love the art of brothers Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, so I really can’t go wrong. I think this is going to be a good overall mini-series. It’s going to take a second issue to get going.

North 40 #1 of 6 (Wildstorm) This set-up really made me think of Stephen King a lot if he were writing for a comic book in his younger days. King in the type of characters, and the humor along with the horror. The story was spread a little thin for a first issue. It either needed to be longer in page length or a little less ambitious for a first issue. The art from Fiona Staples really impressed me and I think it’s going to get better as this series rolls along. I need a second issue to really decide if I’m in for the whole six issues.

Wednesday Comics #1 of 12 (DC) – Not sure how to color this one because I’ll be waiting for the trade on this one. I’d like to sit on the sidelines and read about how well it ends up on issue #12. Although it could be $150 for the trade if they do a larger format. I really liked the art on most of it, but the writing not so much.

Creepy Comics #1 (Dark Horse) – I only like one of the stories in this anthology. It’s all in black and white and it’s $4.99. Not worth the money in my opinion. I never read Creepy before so I wasn’t getting any of that nostalgia. The cover was awesome by Eric Powell but I wish he was doing an interior story as well.

Greek Street #1 (Vertigo) – The story didn’t grab me. I felt like I was just trying to be shocked the whole time. There wasn’t a likable character for me to hold on to. I applaud Vertigo for putting out the $1 books though. Marvel take notice…although hell will have to freeze over before "3.99 Marvel" puts out a $1 first issue.

Star Wars Invasion #1 (Dark Horse)
– I felt like I’ve read this invasion story seven times before. There weren’t any twists or turns along the way to make it new and exciting. I’m glad I tried it out but I’ll just stay with reading Legacy to get my Star Wars comics fix.

Hangman #1 (DC/Red Circle)
Inferno #1 (DC/Red Circle) - I read both these Red Circle one-shots leading into the relaunch of a couple of other Red Circle #1s. I liked them both. They tie together, and the story is hitting me as good quality, a lot better than the "Impact" titles I remember from years ago which was the last time DC took a shot at these characters.

I think the distinguishing factor for me is that these don't seem to be about a new batch of super-heroes, but stories that are just set in a world where super-powered/supernatural characters happen to exist and take part in the stories.

If DC can keep the quality up on these, I'll be sticking with the Red Circle re-launch.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) - This had what is probably the worst cover I have ever seen on a Spider-Man comic. Circle-head spidey. I must admit, I did not buy this, I browsed it in the LCS, and the art was really not to my liking. Too cartoony. People in the shop were all over it though, so it will probably sell good. "It's Bendis, he's never let me down" was something someone said. My reply was "Oh, so you never read Secret Invasion #8 or the last 2 issues of the last Ultimate Spider-Man series???" I'm not trying to be too harsh on Bendis, in general he writes great stuff, but he's not perfect, he does let me down sometimes, and on this book, it has nothing at all to do with him, I just could not stand the art.

Ultimate Avengers #1 (Marvel) - OK, I was going to take a total pass on the Ultimate relaunch, and that was looking like a solid decision as I paged through USM #1. Then I opened Ultimate Avengers #1. Looked good. I read the first few pages. Read good.
I'm happy to see that this is really not a re-boot of the Ultimate Universe (which is what I had previously been afraid of), it's just re-numbering to #1 to get a sales boost. A time-honored tradition. I'll keep getting this book, I'm interested to see where they go with this.

I'm gonna copy you Bob. I didn't pre order either but was curious about both. I read Ult SM while at the store and bought Ult Avengers.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) - I'm with Bob, worst SM cover. Whats with the circle head? When the mask is off, its not that roundish but man the artists uses lots of circles for everything. Story seemed ok but man, makes you really miss Bagley.

Ultimate Avengers #1 (Marvel) - I liked this book, I'll probably stick with it. Art was nice and clean, story was interesting and Millar has had success in the Ult world so I'll stick around.

On reflection.....calling the art on USM #1 "cartoony" is potentially insulting to other cartoony art. What really bugged me was the artist apparently using a circle-template to draw Spider-Man's head. Who (other than Charlie Brown) has a head that shape?

Absolution #1 - I love my Avatar books and this was no difference. The 0 issue came out a few weeks ago and I enjoyed it too. It's fun to see Gage writing something that isn't a MU book. Not to mention, the storyline/idea is right up my alley and one that I can relate too all too well.

Finally getting around to my thoughts Wed Comics #1 - I liked it, wasn't as earth shattering as all the hype made it. Some of the stories were good, some were rubbish. I still love Bob's comment from whatever ep he mentioned that people wanted to use it as wall paper in their homes. I'm curious on how this will be collected afterwards.

Marvels Project #1 - I love Bru and I loved Marvels but I couldn't get into this issue at all. Maybe I was missing something or not into the whole Marvels-lure as others but I'll be passing on this. Maybe after it is done I may check it out after hearing some reviews.
