As far as new comics go, I am usually able to stay current. Sometimes I'll fall a little behind but I usually catch up within a reasonable timeframe. Typically I'll get behind in mid to late July because of going to Comic-Con and it often take a month or so to catch up.

I do tend to let back issues and trades sit around unread for ages.

As for getting comics as investments, I really don't recommend that. Comics are meant to be read and enjoyed.

Anything I don't read I will ultimately stop collecting. I don't invest in comics, I see too many that end up in quarter bins to consider comics an investment (and I bought 5 copies of Dazzler #1, so you can see what my judgment is like...)

I know that comics, especially Modern ones, shouldn't even be considered an investment ... somehow I got sucked into collecting a lot of variants -- I'm just glad I can sell them on eBay for approx 40% of what I paid for them. Now, I will only get those ones that I will actually read -- I find the rating on amazon.com to be helpful when making my decision.

History would indicate that the current glut of variant covers are extremely unlikely to hold value over the long term.

Yep. It was a very expensive lesson for me to learn that

The last ones I purchased are the complete set of Dark Tower Treachery Variants. I'm selling them all eventually and already accepted that I may only be able to recoup 40% of my cost.

Now, I'm sticking to my diet ... Absolutes! ... I'm holding off on the Swamp Thing HC. I'll buy it when they release it in Absolute format. If not, I still have a lot of unread materials in my collection that I need to catch up to :)

Bob, do you have the Amazing Spider-Man Ombnibus? regular or variant? If you do ... how's the binding on this one?
I have the variant edition on all my Omnibii. Generally I have the comics in regular form (or in Masterworks), so my theory is that I get a new cover out of the deal by getting the variant edition.

As I said before, I have never heard this allegation about the binding being weak. I just sent an e-mail over to Chris Marshall at the http://www.collectedcomicslibrary.com/ site. He's the master of all things collected, and should have heard about it if there is really a defect in the omnibus binding.

I'll post his reply back here.
Chris Marshall responds:
ChrisM wrote:I've heard of random problems (with Absolutes, Omnibus and other Bigger books - Madman Gargantua comes to mind) but nothing on an epidemic scale.

I've always had the mind set that these bigger books are primarily for
collectors and not for everyday reading. They look good on the shelf
and the extras are nice, but you can't treat them as a trade
paperback.
I think Chris is implying that you need to be somewhat gentle with these big books and not bounce them around a lot......

Yes I am a bit over ambitious this month but I was surprised with what was in previews this month as last month was a let down

I agree with you. This previews catalog is a lot more exciting than last month's. Of course, I am a huge Batman fan so I am a bit biased :)

I wanted to say how great it was for DCBS to offer a 75% discount on all of DC co-feature books. That is only $0.99 for a 30-page book. Yes, it sucks that DC is also raising their prices, but at least for now they are giving something back in the form of extra content.
