The thing is, switching to a Thursday street date and having that defined as customers not being able to get the items before that date could result in you getting you books on Thursday, not Friday. Just like physical store have certain work to do to prepare the items for sale, so do online stores. It just happens to include shipping the items.Wood wrote:I think moving the date to Thursday is brilliant actually. And while I would miss getting my shipments on Friday at my doorstep, I would have no problem with online shops also having to stick to the new release date.
All in all, I think this would be a good thing for both physical and online stores and has zero impact on publishers and Diamond. And all it would take to make it happen is the decision being made and a notification sent out.
Having Thursday as an official street date would also help out the confusion that goes when new books day is Thursday instead of Wednesday because of Monday being a holiday.
The only thought I have is that isn't Tuesday considered the day that Novels and CDs come out? Would it be better to be consistent with that being the day comics are release, especially as more and more trades are produced.
The other good reason for picking Tuesday is that the shops could actually have 3 non-weekend (not including Friday) days to sale the product. The problem with Thursday sales date is that it is 1 day prior to the beginning of the weekend, therefore all of their sales are concentrate on the weekend. If you move the new comic book day to Tuesday, then the problem does not occur.
Of course, my suggestion would take a lot more work than John's suggestion. Overall, it the comic book industry wants to be effective, the shops need to get their books days in advance, like the regular book stores do. It might reduced the extra expense that shops have to pay for in terms of hiring additional help on Wednesday/ Tuesday night to get their books out.

Great discussion this month. I have been an avid listener for about a year now. This one made me join the forums to comment.
A Thursday street date with a Wednesday ship date would be a great thing for the West Coast shops. I was laughing when I heard you talking about rushing around trying to get the books out before you open on Wednesday.
I live in a small town on the very NW tip of Oregon. My local comic shop gets their books late Wednesday afternoon. They have four people on staff starting at 230 (they never get them before that) and it is a mad dash to get them done before the shop closes at 6. Many days I can only get part my pull list on Wednesday. For us the lateness of the books arrivals has effectively made Thursday comic book day already.
Marvel is already shipping early to those people who subscribe through Marvel. I am a regular at Ifanboy where I will see reviews, ratings and comments on books as early as Monday on some occaisions. Those posters indicate that they get the books they subscribe through Marvel 1-2 days early every time.

This is very interesting. It's the first I've heard of folks getting subscription copies early. Marvel must have them mailed out around the same time they ship to Diamond....astyak wrote: Marvel is already shipping early to those people who subscribe through Marvel.
