Maybe this will be the first cross-over event of the new universe?abysslord wrote:
I wonder if anything does come up with this woman, what title will it be told in? You'd think they'd have to select a title, or maybe create a mini-series ... or maybe something else.

Sales are still going strong with a bunch of sell-outs for the books shipping on Sept. 7th......

This is something I hadn't been focusing on, but makes sense:

This is something I hadn't been focusing on, but makes sense:
Jason Leivian of Floating World Comics in Portland, OR reported sell outs on about half the titles including "Green Arrow" while the expected hits of "Action Comics" and "Batgirl" hit their highest numbers. "So far, it's kind of exceeded people's expectations, which was good. Probably the best part of it was that I had a lot of new customers coming in. I had a lot of people saying 'I haven't read comics in five years, but this is getting me back into it."
So "new" customers who are lapsed readers coming back...... I think these people are very likely to become ongoing customers again if they like what they are reading. Maybe a bit of an easier sell to get coming back to the LCS than a totally new reader who's never read comics before. The customer base was a question broached by many retailers. Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics of Concord, CA and ComicsPRO said that "We saw some new buyers, we saw some returning comic fans, and we did see people come in from stores in this general area that had sold out too quickly" calling the launch "an unqualified success."

Floating World Comics is not your typical comics shop, either. He has released, on his blog, his top selling comics of the year for the past couple years and there's barely a superhero or mainstream book in the bunch...Jason is perfectly happy to carry and sell superhero books but his shop is one of the most diverse and Indie-friendly I've seen. His customer base is likely to have a higher percentage than average of people who aren't normally reading these kinds of titles.BobBretall wrote:

DC emailed retailers yesterday to tell us that all of the titles for this week are already sell outs as well. Of course someone at Diamond screwed up and for some reason Grifter #1 and Batwoman #1 seem to have been pushed off to next week despite DC claiming them among the sell outs (at least for those of us serviced by Plattsburgh, I don't know if all centers were affected).
We now have digital comics for sale. Check out our shop

Is DC just not for me? What do you think they were expecting for a hit rate on these? I need DC fans to get me excited. I have bought 15 out of the new 52 so far and there just aren't many that are working for me. This week is working better for me than last week. I was very excited for the reboot and ready to go crazy on DC.
I think I bought too hard into the hype because I thought the books were going to have more story in each one. To me these are like one-shot pilots and too many of them feel like Chapter 1 of 6 or whatever. It is a way more difficult for them to hit on something like that versus just having 1 kick (bleep) issue. I was hoping they were really going to change not just the details about the comics but how they were telling the stories.
Thanks.

Which ones did you buy & which ones did you like? Out of the 13 I got last week, I only had 4 make it onto my permanent pull list so far. That's about 30%.LA Rabbit wrote:Is DC just not for me? Everyone's going to like different titles.......LA Rabbit wrote: I need DC fans to get me excited.
While I can appreciate the desire for more self contained stories (I'd have liked to see that more too), I'm not sure that DC explicitly set any kind of expectation for them. I think they are trying to drag people into the continued story habit.LA Rabbit wrote: I think I bought too hard into the hype because I thought the books were going to have more story in each one. I will say that on the books I like most, I feel like I'm getting a good chunk of story in the #1 AND they are leaving me with a good story hook to make we want to read more (Detective, Animal Man, Swamp Thing.....)

Okay, I have not read the actual book yet, and won't until the end of the month when my box comes, but I've finally got my first "thumbs down" to something going on with the new 52 initiative.
** SPOILER BELOW ** - Although it's on most of the news sites now so it really won't be for long...
Suicide Squad #1 - I think you know where this is going. They put Amanda Waller on a diet! Seriously? Come on, people! She was "The Wall!" She was one of the few people who wasn't afraid of Batman! Heck, sometimes she scared him! And she was always large and in charge, and now that's gone.
I'm actually not joking about this. It was great to have a strong character out there who didn't conform to the hourglass body type and looked like she knew her way around a full-course meal! I'm not saying we need fat superheroes, but one of the things that made Amanda great WAS her girth!
Glad I bought those Jim Calafiore pages of her so I can remember the good ol' days... yeesh!

"That...that HAIR!!!" - Deadpool, Deadpool #11
I am going to give most of the books a shot at number 2, so maybe my hit rate will end up hight. The only book that I am hooked on for the long run is Frankenstein. Lots of story, lots of action, introduced the new characters, nice cliffhanger. It got me excited and that was what I was looking for. I can't wait for the next issue. I had not read any of the old Frankenstein books so a clean break for me.
The only books that are definitely out are the Batman books that I have tried (Detective, Batwoman, Batgirl). I used to be a real Batman nut back in the day but I guess I got my fill of Batman from back then. I just attribute these to my taste and no fault of the creators or books. Clearly I am in the minority here as Batman is probably the single most popular character in DC (or maybe Green Lantern).
I know everyone loves Animal Man and Swamp Thing and I am going to try the second issues of both but they didn't grab me like Frankenstein. They fall in the vast group of the other books that had nice things going on but usually felt like there wasn't enough in the issue. None of them also have me really pining for the next issue (except Frankenstein).
I just DC has a real opportunity here. It seems like from sales, I can't be alone in trying so many new books at once. I just want them to do crazy stuff, try a variety of different things. They certainly are trying a war book and a western book so that is start but this is it. If they do another reboot in 5 years, I certainly won't be trying as many books. I have descended into rambling now.

I'm pretty sure this is a direct follow-on from her character being portrayed by Angela Bassett in the Green Lantern movie..... Just the DC comics version being synched up with what people might be familiar with from the movies. Heck, even given that GL was a Hollywood flop 20x the people saw the movie than have read the comics with the character lately.torchsong wrote: Suicide Squad #1 - I think you know where this is going. ALSO, is it just me, or was the new Green Arrow made to look a lot like the GA character as portrayed on Smallville?

I'm with you, Al.
