***** is Dead [Siege #4 spoiler warning]
Finally, that whiny jerk The Sentry is dead!!!
If nothing else, Siege got rid of this (bleep) character.....
I'd say "once & for all", but the thing with Cloc in the "Fallen Sun" issue makes me think they are leaving themselves an out to bring this crappy character back for another try.
BTW, I didn't know what I was expecting, but that whole Fallen Sun issue was a bunch of ret-conning about what a great guy the Sentry was and why the character was not really crappy.
Not buying it one bit.....

I'm not that crazy about the Sentry as a character but I think he served as a good plot device. Basically it was a "What If Superman Had Gone Crazy?" for the Marvel universe. Yeah, I realize this has been done before (Irredeemable, Watchmen, etc.) but here it's actually in a universe we have history with so we can watch events unfold through the eyes of characters we're familiar with. It makes us that much more invested in the story, IMO.
Fallen Sun was garbage though. Had I know the actual title & creative team behind it beforehand I wouldn't have added it to my DCBS order.

Yeah, I was no fan of the Sentry either. The whole thing got old quickly. At one point I expected him to morph into Marvelman, figuring that was how they'd get around this obvious rip-off existing in a universe into which they were going to bring Marvelman.BobBretall wrote:Finally, that whiny jerk The Sentry is dead!!!

Lame, I realize, but not nearly as lame as some of the Sentry tales we've read in the past.

Sentry BEFORE he was the Sentry
Heroes Corner updated their site with my latest article re: The Sentry. I was doing some reading of the Acclaim Shadowman series and stumbled across some very interesting stuff from Mr. Jenkins.

Cool article, Mike! Plus, you have clued me into a comic series I don't have & totally missed (e.g. never heard of before): Acclaim's Deadside! I now have that on my want list.mikemclarty wrote: For details, please read the column:

Jenkins said (in Deadside #1):
I never really got this "commentary on the state of the industry" feel from Sentry. I mostly got the "woe is me, I have a mental illness" feel (unless Jenkins was just trying to say the industry is schizophrenic with a poorly articulated "dark side"....)It’s basically a character that I created, who in the course of the story comments on the state of the industry…how it has been, as it continues to be, and what it could be in the future.
Maybe this went off the rails when it went from being creator owned to being shoe-horned into Marvel under the ill-advised "lost Stan Lee character" marketing campaign.
Well I slightly have a different opinion of Sentry. I thought the original series that spawned him off was very good. I also enjoyed how they used him in Dark Avengers leading up to Siege and I believe he was very well used in the Siege crossover. Personally I thought the Siege crossover was very effective for 4 issues. I am one in the few that also enjoyed the Fallen Sun story arc.
The Sentry was interesting to me because he was so different (whinny and unsure of himself but all powerful). At the same time this made him an extremely creepy character because he was easily manipulated by others. This is something I found interesting and also that he had to live with a great evil inside of him for so long. Most of my friends absolutely hate the character but I guess there are a small portion of readers who did enjoy the character. I do love that comics inject characters that are different every now and then even if they are hated. If a character brings out love or hate then I think they are effective because at least it makes you like or hate rather than not care at all.
I will probably remember his death more than I did his life but I will agree with Tony he made for a great plot device.

Re: Sentry BEFORE he was the Sentry
Bob, Deadside is VERY difficult to find, and they only released 3 of the 4 issues before Acclaim closed up shop. It's very dark and twisted with artwork supplied by Mr. Ashley Wood (go figure - Wood doing twisted piece?!).BobBretall wrote:Cool article, Mike! The Sentry had a lot of potential. The original mini-series had some excellent moments. I would've loved to see The Sentry through another publisher.
