Secret Empire

Post by tehkeizer »

Issue zero just came out. what did you guys think of it?

I have been enjoying the steve rogers lead up. it tells a new story, a lot of fun storying telling that i know wont matter 5 years from now because they're going to erase it by kobik just as they added it, but who cares as long as the stories are good? its like a long form "what if".

this zero issue to me is everything that a zero issues should be. it sets the stage. it tells you the players and what they've been up to (even if you're not reading their books).

I think this can be a fun "event" (heads up, i like events. they're fun to me). what do you guys think? are you dreading it? do you look forward to it? what did you think of zero issue?

do most people realize that hydra are not nazis?
i feel like hydra's biggest downfall (and they've done some bad stuff) is that they aligned themselves with nazi's and were lead by red skull for a really long time.

I'm not a heavy Marvel reader, so I can't speak from in-depth knowledge of their universe. I've read Wikipedia, I've watched the movies, and I've read some Marvel comics over the last 5 years. To the average comic reader and to the larger world of Marvel movie fans, Hydra evokes an image of Nazis. Most of us became aware of Hydra in "Captain America: The First Avenger" where they were presented as a mystical R&D offshoot of the Nazi party. The perception is that they seem to have a fascination with ruling the world, German-accents, megalomaniac leaders, and oppression. So the popular media interpretation of Hydra as a group is something of a neo-fascist, totalitarian, world order founded on the ideology of former Nazis. It's basically a situation of "If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck..." Now, has Marvel tried to expand on what Hydra actually is over the years through retcons? Yes, but you have to be a lot more invested in decades of stories to have any nuanced view of Hydra as more than comic book Nazis.
I read comic books for fun.

that is a real bummer. but i guess i understand. its hard to part ways when you were so deep with that group. and your leader for so long was part of that group.

Issue 5. i'm still enjoying it. that last page though....puts them on a tight wire.
either..
1 - they arent playing fair and its gonna be bad
2 - there is a great story to tell about how this came about and they need to tell it.
3 - there is a bad story to tell, and they tell it
4 - there is a great story to tell, and they dont tell it.

i am hoping very strongly for number 2.

is anyone NOT enjoying this event? everyone i know who is super into comics (10+ titles in box) seems to be loving it, and peripheral comic readers seem to be hating it.

i was surprised at the outpouring of internet hate i received after praising the latest cap and SE on twitter - the vitriol came fast and furious and then turned from aimed at me to nick spencer to marvel hate to racial slurs - and most of the non racist complaints were from folks that havent even read it but instead read a post about it somewhere or heard it from someone - crazy

I thought it was pretty cool. Not a huge Hydra fan, but I always valued the Red Skull as a villain, he really is one of the most evil villains in comic books.
