Awesome! It will just be SDCC and one day at Austin Comic-Con for me this year. Was thinking I might be able to figure out a work trip around Emerald City, but it doesn't look likely to happen.
Still, any year that includes san diego is a good one, imo.

I was toying with the idea of Emerald City a few weeks ago & when I checked, the tickets were sold out.Trev wrote:Was thinking I might be able to figure out a work trip around Emerald City, but it doesn't look likely to happen.

Cosplay is riding a major wave right now. I just did the Amazing Arizona Con (same people who run the Vegas one) and there were panels, poster sales, interviews, etc. for several of the cosplay people out there. Very much an industry now...and lest we poo-poo it, many of them make their own costumes and are talented tailors/craftspeople.
Or, as Lemmy from Motorhead put it: "Good luck to 'em if they're pretty. Wish I was."*

Interesting that Jimmie Jay (of JayCompany cheesecake variant cover "fame") is trying to build a convention empire.....torchsong wrote:I just did the Amazing Arizona Con (same people who run the Vegas one)

I believe there's plans for other conventions in other states under this banner, so yes, this is looking like a new "Wizard World" opening up. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. I made money back on my booth but little else. They touted Stan Lee showing up, but ill health forced him to cancel. Jim Lee was there, though.BobBretall wrote:Interesting that Jimmie Jay (of JayCompany cheesecake variant cover "fame") is trying to build a convention empire.....torchsong wrote:I just did the Amazing Arizona Con (same people who run the Vegas one)

I don't poo-poo cosplay. I like it. I'm considering doing it myself at FanExpo this year. But I'm a nervous, shy, scaredy-cat afraid of public spectacle. That's part of the reason I want to do it, though. I like to do things I'm afraid of.torchsong wrote:Cosplay is riding a major wave right now. I cosplay as a black mage from Final Fantasy (Rule 1: Cosplay to your body type if you can help it! ). It's way fun to do. Of late, though, it has emerged from something fun that fans like to do to an actual money-making endeavor for those really good at it (or, to be chauvinistic for a moment...a hot body and a willingness to flaunt it.)boshuda wrote:I don't poo-poo cosplay. The closest shop to me is moving locations and adding a cosplay boutique and consultation service.torchsong wrote:Cosplay is riding a major wave right now. I find that really interesting. I would be interested to hear more about it when they get up and running.Trev wrote:The closest shop to me is moving locations and adding a cosplay boutique and consultation service.torchsong wrote:Cosplay is riding a major wave right now. I don't know if Jessica would be a cosplay superstar. Depends on how you want to define it. I think she is just a hot chick that got photographed a lot in a Pikachu outfit at Comic-Con a few years ago (myself being one of those photographers). I don't know if she makes her own costumes. Someone like Yaya might be more in the realm of a superstar (looks, makes costumes, unique, etc.).
Big Wow! in San Jose in May is gearing up to have a major cosplay component to their once lacking masquerade. And with Wonder Con now out of the Bay Area, they are getting many top notch creators. It is a good con to get face time with them two months before the crowds in San Diego.
Last year, Stockton-Con debuted in August and I heard good things about it from a sales point of view. The theory was they were getting the bounce effect of San Diego the month after with all these people that heard about SDCC and couldn't go so they are going to this and other smaller more local cons.
I got a badge for Wonder Con but I'm going to have to pass. Too many cons and not enough money. But my con season is looking like this:
May: Big Wow! in San Jose (exhibiting)
July: Comic-Con in San Diego (three days only, not exhibiting)
August: Stockton-Con in Stockton (exhibiting)
October: A.P.E. in San Francisco (exhibiting)
If all that goes well, I'd like to branch out beyond NorCal in 2014 to more west coast cons like Vegas, Emerald City, Long Beach, Wonder Con. But it always comes down to Time and Money, doesn't it?

Re: The Amazing Las Vegas Comic Convention
I'm not sure if making one's own costumes is something a lot of the people in the "hot girl" category do. A couple of years back at Phoenix Con I was hosting a panel of Cosplay vs. Comics people Family Feud & when I went down the line of conversation about making ones own costumes being a key element of the cosplay experience (I honestly thought it was), the hot girls on the panel got kind of offended at me (they did not make their own costumes).atomic99 wrote: I don't know if she makes her own costumes.

Re: The Amazing Las Vegas Comic Convention
Some do, some don't. There are a few I follow (with the wife's permission and full knowledge ) who do make their own gear (and post tutorials on how to do it yourself). And yes, then there's the hotties who buy their costumes (generally FROM the other cosplayers who make their own). I don't know if it's a "dividing line" between the two camps or anything like that. I'm not pretty.BobBretall wrote:I'm not sure if making one's own costumes is something a lot of the people in the "hot girl" category do.
