DC Universe relaunch in September 2011

Last four are up and as expected.

Surprised at some titles that missed the cut. Particularly JSA.

I think as DC is trying to make everything "new & shiny" they decided to de-emphasize a book that by it's nature focuses on "old" heroes from the 1940s.

You can do updated characters, but then just call it something else.....JSA is about the legacy to the old guard that there is currently a perception of "readers don't want to see that" about.

DC has also sent us retailers a document with solicits for all 52, only thing it doesn't have is cover images. They sent it to us to "review before its released on Monday".

I don't think it has anything that isn't already everywhere on the net. It is another case where they are giving retailers warning about something they have already released to every other source.

My list 19 titles (not including Vertigo) that is a 7 title increase to DC pre-Flashpoint

SUPERMAN #1 (Heck yeah)

ACTION COMICS #1 (hopeful but concerned w/ Grant Morrison at the helm wanting it more like All Star Superman w/o the meta BS from his Batman stuff)

SUPERGIRL #1 (Yes!)

SUPERBOY #1 (Hate the costume but I will read it)

Will buy (but it isn't Superman)

SWAMP THING #1 (Looking forward to a quality horror comic from DC)

I'm sure it will make initial orders on the books even more dificult to Gauge.

I predict a huge array of sell outs on the fringe books due to people not having a clue on order numbers...

Agree with the shiny new aspect but still surprised just based on sales. Even though JSA was losing readers (aren't they all) it was still one of DCs better selling titles and would undoubtably out sell some of the relaunch titles being offered. On the positive side, they won't be getting the updated costumes ... other than Mr. Terrific.

One thing the relaunch has done is make me curious as to how DC is going to 'vanish' some of the more prominent heroes that don't have a title or at least a venue of some kind to appear. The JSA has a whole lot of heroes to retire.

The way I'm proceeding is to assume that until a character is mentioned or appears in these new titles they never existed in the re-vamped universe and therefore there will be nothing to "vanish", they simply never were.

Think of it as there is a brand new comic publisher hitting the scene called DC comics and they have this new comic line coming out with all new characters you've never heard of before, and gee will it be swell!

Exactly. There will be minor changes for the Batman and Green Lantern books, but larger changes for the rest of the line as they have not sold as well over the past few years. Some other clarifications:

The first story arc of Justice League takes place in the past and is the new origin of the team. The second arc will jump ahead to current time. I wouldn't be surprised if Morrison's first issue of Action takes place over a few years as well.

George Perez stated that he is doing layouts for Superman with Jesus Merino as finisher. That is awesome. Jesus Merino is a great artist on his own but used to be Carlos Pacheco's inker. And to be honest, Carlos Pacheco's art hasn't looked the same since Merino went on his own.

The more I think about it, the more this makes sense. For us old readers it probably doesn't matter. But for younger readers, why would you want to read about characters that are older. I think it makes sense for DC to "de-age" their main characters and keep them in their 20s. Second, retire the JSA's characters that have counterparts in the JL. Again, it only makes sense for us old readers, but not a lot sense to get new readers into the universe. Now, it doesn't mean you get rid of all the JSA characters, but focus on the younger generation. There are a lot of great characters that both Roy Thomas, Geoff Johns, and others created.

The last thing is the name. If the Justice League is the brand they want to sell, then they won't call the team JSA any more, it is too confusing. Either they call it "Justice League something" or use the Infinity Inc name. But, by calling the new horror team book Justice League Dark, I believe that DC is using Marvel's strategy for branding, instead of using existing group names (i.e. Defenders).
