I think a large part of this is "on the whole, people who buy comics at the LCS just prefer Marvel characters & comics". They buy more Marvel titles because they're more familiar with & like the characters more.

People will progress from this to liking certain creators, but the fans are made in the 1st place by the characters. The X-Men are just cooler to most teenage boys when they first get into comics than The Flash, I think. This stays with them for a long time.

Yes, Marvel wouldn't be doing this if they weren't selling & making money. They don't do this on titles that aren't selling well.

I'd argue that Heroes 4 Hire and Avengers Academy are not neccessarily in the highest tier of Marvel titles, but both have had (or will have) Two issues per month.

To be fair the only mainstream DC characters that do not have multiple titles are Wonder Woman and The Flash over the last couple of years. Now Flash has an event centered around its title. Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Justice League, and formerly the JSA had multiple titles coming out.
