What comics from your childhood do you wish were collected?

Post by onemaddog »

When I was puzzling about what got me started in Comics I got to thinking about comics that I read as a kid with little or no chance of being collected or reprinted.

I particularly miss "Warlord" comic which was a rival to the rather more famous "Battle" and the magazine that eventually merged with it " Bullet". I would love to see some of the characters such as "Code Name Warlord"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlord_(DC_Thomson)

I read that comic from 1974 through 1980.

I would also like to see some of the other British kids comic books such as the Beano and Dandy collected and reprinted. Classic characters such as Dennis The menace (not the US version), The Bash street Kids, The numskulls and my personal favorite "Desperate Dan" would be a real treat for me.

I have been trying to get some good copies of the original Desperate Dan annuals from eBAY but have been burned a few times with nasty smelly poor quality merchandise.

If it wasnt for the short lived British Comic Wildcat, (which lasted 10 issues and folded into Eagle.) I don't think I'd be reading comics now. I'd love to get those issues again whether in single or collected form to see the stories that started me reading.

I read a lot of comic magazines when I was growing up, titles like Marvel Preview, Eerie's horror comic titles, and Charlton's television series Space:1999.

The one title I wish the most they would collect is Star-Lord from Marvel Preview. Those old Claremont stories were sci-fi based stories unlike what was being published in the regular Marvel comics and drawn by John Byrne. When I would read those old black and white comics I felt like I was reading something that was meant for adults and not kids.

I would say Atari Force and the Micronauts, both series that will never be collected.

I agree with Star-Lord and Micronauts.

I'd also like to see more Harvey Comics reprinted. Maybe break it down by title like Richie Rich & Casper or Vaults of Mystery.

Also...

Epic Illustrated
Marvel Preview

In Essential format...
Shang-Chi, Master of Kung-Fu
Shogun Warriors
Captain Britain (starting with the 1970s weekly books)
Marvel Premiere

You're not likely to see these because of licensing issues.

I know but it is my wish list. Still, we got one volume of Conan before Dark Horse got it and a volume of Godzilla out of Toho. So maybe they'll work something out for Shogun Warriors, Rom, and Micronauts.

Could they get away with replacing the Fu Manchu name (like is currently being done in Secret Avengers) in a bold revisionist change and get away with it perhaps?

Since it's just some names, I suppose they could theoretically edit the dialogue all over the place and change a bunch of names, but, in addition to Fu Manchu himself, the following prominent names would have to be changed (at a minimum):

Fah Lo Suee - Fu Manchu's daughter
Si Fan - Fu Manchu's secret organization
Sir Denis Nayland Smith

Not sure if any of the other characters like Blackjack Tarr or Clive Reston were original to Marvel comics, or if they were named after characters from the Fu Manchu books.

But you're right, Ralph. Master of Kung Fu was a great series, too bad it probably won't be collected so more people would have a chance to read it.

I didn't realize it was more than the Fu Manchu name. So maybe they should just pay for the rights or swing a deal where a percentage goes to the owners? It isn't like those names are raking in the money so maybe a cut of something is better than a larger cut of nothing?

I'm not sure when the Gulacy work started but the later issues had Zeck and Gene Day inking and all of that stuff would look fantastic in black and white in the Essential format.

I'd like to see Strikeforce: Morituri collected. I have great memories of this series. It may have been one of the first series that grabbed and kept my attention that wasn't a cape and masks book.

This ones easy. Micronauts, by a long shot.

I'd love to have an over-sized, recolored hardcover of the original Michael Golden art.

Runners up are New Teen Titans. Yay for the Omnibus coming out soon, but the issues in the 20-40 range are, for me, the high water mark, and as far as I know they haven't ever been collected.

LSH, pre-Great Darkness stuff. Most of these have never been collected.

Oh, and finally, I'd love me some Cerebus hardcovers on decent paper.

This is the prefect candidate for getting bound into your own hardcover. The issues can be gotten really cheap & it's very unlikely that Marvel will do a collected edition.

This is one of the reasons that I bound almost all of the Crossgen books. I was able to get 2nd copies for 50 cents or $1 each & with Crossgen out of business, they would not be doing HC collections. Marvel may do them at some point, but I'd just as soon do my own as throw more $$ at Marvel.

Agreed. It's probably the best comic out there that A LOT of people haven't read. Great writing, and great artwork (particularly the Gulacy, Zeck, and Gene Day issues).
