DC goes crazy with Flashpoint - give them all your $$

Post by BobBretall »

DC announced today that Flashpoint, it's big event for 2011 will include:

1.) A five-part central mini series from Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert

2.) Fifteen additional mini series (to be revealed throughout the day)

3.) A heap of one-shots
15 minis????? PLUS extra one shots?

Even with "Holding the Line at $2.99" that seems a bit excessive to me.......

It's possible that they will suspend their regular series during Flashpoint and just replace them with these minis. I'm hoping that's what they do, so we get this pile of Flashpoint INSTEAD of the normal stuff not IN ADDITION TO the normal books.

Bleeding Cool recently ran a story that this may run like the Age of Apocalypse.

ie main series would be replaced for a while.

That MUST be the case here as DC couldn't flood the market like that, could they?

I thought DC did the same thing with Batman Returns. They stopped all the books to put out one-shots. I did not read Batman Returns so DC saved me some money that month.

On the surface, I see what you're saying.

Still, I'm not sure DC has the rep for bloating an event as much as Marvel does.

Once you get the Previews, you'll know if these minis replace the main titles or not.

I did the same thing (though I subsequently picked up unsold inventory of Batman Returns one-shots for $1 each). It was OK, but not great.

That said, interrupting the runs of 15 normal books for 3 months seems a lot more of a risk than the 1 month Batman event. If people don't buy into the gimmick, maybe they don't come back after the minis run their course.

I'll be curious to see the actual solicits (which should be in the NEXT previews for march, not the one shipping next Wed. The solicits for march are already on the Web.)

Let's make some guesses on what some of these Flashpoint minis could replace on the DC publishing schedule for 3 months:

Replaces Batman: Dark Knight: BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE #1-#3
Replaces Batman& Robin: DEADMAN AND THE FLYING GRAYSONS #1-#3
Replaces Flash: CITIZEN COLD #1-#3
Replaces Titans: DEATHSTROKE & THE CURSE OF THE RAVAGER #1-#3
Replaces Outsiders: THE OUTSIDER #1-#3
Replaces Green Lantern: ABIN SUR THE GREEN LANTERN #1-#3
Replaces Superman: PROJECT: SUPERMAN #1-#3
Replaces Zatanna: FRANKENSTEIN & THE CREATURES OF THE UNKNOWN #1-#3
Replaces Secret Six: SECRET SEVEN #1-#3
Takes over Brightest Day slot: EMPEROR AQUAMAN #1-#3
Replaces Wonder Woman: WONDER WOMAN AND THE FURIES #1-#3
Replaces Action Comics: LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #1-#3
Replaces Teen Titans: KID FLASH LOST #1-#3
This seems like an extra: THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT #1-#3

I'll get the main 5 part mini of Flashpoint itself & these 2 side minis

Replaces Superman: PROJECT: SUPERMAN #1-#3
Replaces Action Comics: LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #1-#3

That is all.

I don't have as much money as I did last year w/ rent going up, food prices going up, etc..

I will get one or two more additional trades instead of going all in to Flashpoint like I did w/ Final Crisis. Just to counterbalance the event probably cheap Vertigo trades.

It seems like each mini will (hopefully) be some standalone story of one of the altered-timelines as it effects a particular character or group of related characters. Each could be a cool story, but not essential to the "big picture".

Just hearing the title Lois Lane and the Resistance reminds me of one of my favorite comic stories. Super Seven was an elseworlds story that ran in a Superman Annual and a Superboy Annual. Aliens had taken over the world, any show of a hero using their power and people would be killed so all the heroes were in hiding.

Lois Lane ran the Resistance in that storyline too.

oh and it had Mike Mignola art in one of the issue aswell. I definitely recommend people look it up.

That's interesting because I liked those Elseworlds Annuals that DC ran across their line in 1994 also (23 of them!) In fact, Over the past few weeks I've been buying up a 2nd set of them for 50 cents - $1 each and I'm going to get them bound into a set of HCs.

The story you're talking about was in Adventures of Superman Annual #6 and Superboy Annual #1 (both 1994).

BTW, Mignola did a lot of striking covers for the event (including all 4 main Superman titles) but didn't do any interior art.

Besides the main series the only minis I plan on purchasing is :

FLASHPOINT: KID FLASH LOST #1-#3
FLASHPOINT: THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT #1-#3

I might get the Abin Sur mini but I will make that decision after flipping through the issue at my LCS
